What are some holistic ways to help with getting pregnant?

Holistic just means care for the whole person—physically, emotionally, and spiritually, but I am going to assume that this question is maybe using the term holistic to refer to non-pharmaceutical methods.  Let’s consider some physiology.  In general for a normal, healthy couple, there is a 20% chance of conception each month.  So we expect that most couples will conceive within about a year of trying.

It is useful for women to track their cycles.  Surprise!  Not all of us have a 28 day cycle.  But for women with regular, monthly cycles the second half of the cycle from ovulation through the start of a period flow is 14 days.  So look ahead at the calendar to when you expect your next period.  Then subtract 14 days.  That should be around the time that you ovulate, and those 3 days—day 13, 14, 15— are going to be the best time to have intercourse.  There are some over the counter ovulation prediction kits that can help assist with confirming ovulation or your “most fertile” window.

Additionally for women, it is recommended that you be taking a prenatal vitamin approximately 3 months prior to conception and maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Healthy lifestyle factors include no smoking, no alcohol or THC use unless you’re on your period—in which case you’re not pregnant.

For the guys, limit the alcohol, stop smoking, and stop using marijuana.  All of those substances, particularly the marijuana, can dramatically drop sperm counts.

Finally, personal lubricants can also be toxic to sperm, so if lubricant is something you like, try Pre-seed brand.  It is the most gentle on the sperm.

For women who are under age 30 and have been trying to conceive with the same partner for 12 months or more, it is time to see your gynecologist.  For ladies who are over age 30, you may want to see your gyno about fertility after 6 months of trying to conceive.

I hope this helps you feel encouraged and empowered!
